Stargirl

At first the students at Arizona's Mica High School are captivated by Stargirl Caraway's unusual, carefree behavior; however, she is soon shunned for everything that makes her unique in this story that pits individuality against conformity. This is one of my favorite books of all time! There is a sequel called Love, Stargirl.

  1. This book was amazing! I read it in one afternoon. I thought the book would be girly, but it wasn't at all! (Which made it better..) I wish it would've ended better, but over all it was great. I'm definitely going to read the sequel!

  2. This was a great read! You'll love and hate the characters at times. I couldn't stop reading, although i do wish the ending was better. I'm reading the second one for sure!!

    1. Like you, I did hate the characters at times! Some of the decisions they chose made me mad at them and changed my outlook on the book. True, the ending could have been better. I wanted to physically slap Leo for letting Stargirl get away! But, I hope their relationship gets better in the sequel!

  3. I loved this book! It took me less than a week to read, and I hated when I had to put it down. Since the narrator was a male it wasn't as 'girly' as you think it would be. It really gets you thinking on how you and others treat people that are different at your school. Though the book didn't end as well as I hoped, I am definitely picking up the sequel sometime soon. There was always something mysterious that Stargirl was doing that kept you on your toes. I would recommend this book to anyone. It was a terrific read.

  4. Out of all the books I've read so far, I liked this one the best. It was a really good book! I think the ending should have been different and I'm going to find the sequel because I think its going to be great!

    1. I disagree I thought that the ending was just fine. There is another book after this so even thought it kind of left you hanging I don't think that it was bad at all.

  5. I really liked this book. I was hesitant about reading the book at first because of the cliche title. Once i actually started reading it, my opinion immediately changed. This book was good although I really wish the ending was better. This book is recommendable to anyone who wants a good book to read.

    1. I agree! I thought it'd be kinda cheesy because of the title, but it was amazing. I'm glad I read it.

    2. I also agree! It is a very good book. Even though i didn't like it at first it turned out to be very good.

  6. Out of the three books I read, this book was my least favorite. I thought it was really cheesy and boring. Although, I liked the theme. "Don't change for anyone. Be who you are." Stargirl was rather interesting and definitely had confidence which was cool but I did not like the narrator. It might be that reading a book from a boy's POV is different for me, but I just didn't care for this book.

    1. I disagree with you. I really liked the book. I thought it was interesting from a guy's point of view. It gave it a little twist.

  7. I thought that this book was over all very good. I didn't like the beginning, it was weird and had a really slow plot line and I often lost interest. Stargirl was just so odd she almost didn't fit into the book. Once I got to the middle I fell in love with this book. Stargirl's (or Susan) and Leo's relationship was so cute and I just wanted to jump in the book and be with them. At some parts in this book I held the book to my cheat in just udder and complete love of the wording and events that where taking place. the ending of this book was so adorable and yet sad that I both loved it and it saddened me. This book really showed me a lot about the normal bay school society that we all just give in to and become apart of. I recommend this book to every one!

  8. I really enjoyed this book. I will admit that the beginning was slow but by the end I was in love with the story. It taught me not to care what anyone else thinks about me and to just be myself. I wish the author made the story more interesting at the beginning but I love the twist at the end. Great story!

    1. I agree with W2Hill-Mon. The beginning was a bit slow but it got really good around the middle of the book. I loved how Stargirl didnt care what others thought of her. I do wish though that the author made it a little more interesting from the start of the book.

  9. I believe theme was a big part of this story. The theme of this story revolved around our main character 'Stargirl' and her learning to just be herself no matter what. I really liked this book and I recommend it to anyone because it teaches great self-confidence.

  10. Stargirl really touched my heart! From the start to finish of the story, the pot line be original was very inspirational throughout the book. I escepcialy love the amount of suspense the book offers to the readers in the end. I highly reccomend this book to anyone who likes a love story or the for your soul type of reads.

    1. I loved the suspense at the end too! It left me on the edge of my seat and I can’t wait to read the sequel. I also really enjoyed the suspense of when she changed her name to Susan. I couldn’t figure out what was going to happen next. Stargirl as a person touched my heart. She taught me to be myself.

    2. I agree with W2De Guzman. I loved the suspense in it as well, but I kind of wish it would have had a little more suspense. I would also recommend this book for soul type readers! It was a very inspirational book.

  11. I really enjoyed reading “Stargirl”. I often found myself extremely mad at the protagonist, Leo. I didn’t agree with most of his decisions regarding his relationship throughout the book. I did like Spinelli’s use of figurative language. One of my favorite examples would be when he used personification in “She laughed and the dessert sang.” I thought Spinelli sent out a good message with the theme of being you and not changing to make other people happy.

  12. This is a very good book! I loved it! The begining was hard for me to keep reading, but when I got to the middle and the end it was awesome! I would recommend this book to anyone!

    1. I agree about the beginning being hard to get into. The story doesn't really pick up until the middle of the book, but it's still a wonderful book. I honestly could not sit it down. I was very upset with the ending though. I hope the second one ends better.

  13. I personally loved this book. It has an amazing message behind it. "Stargirl" teaches us that it is okay to be different. I disagreed with Leo throughout the book and his perspective on Stargirl. I think it is amazing the way she sticks out in a crowd, instead of constantly trying to fit in. No matter what, she was herself. That was all that mattered.

    1. H2 Lomax-

I definitely liked the theme as well. It was kind of like a metaphor throughout the story that compared Stargirl to everyone else. Metaphor meaning: comparing two unlike things w/o using like or as, Stargirl often compared herself to the night sky, her rat and even Leo. With that said, I liked how Stargirl was herself using the theme but also managed to be like others at the same time.

  14. Stargirl was an amazing book. It was simple, sweet, and very inspiring. I found that the theme taught everyone who read it a very important lesson: "Always be yourself, no matter what." Stargirl was always herself, even though everyone else didn't want her to be. My perspective on people who are different than myself were completely changed. This book was fantastic and it definitely receives five stars.

  15. I did not enjoy this book as much as i thought i would. I thought is was weird and had a bad ending. I feel like i never really hit he climax and i just wasnt very interested with the book. Altho, i did really like the message in the book. I would probably not recomend this book to others.

  16. Stargirl is one of my favorite books. I liked how much confidence stargirl had throughout the book. This book had a very good lesson in it. It was simple, but had great detail. When I first looked at the book I didn't think I was going to like it very much, but as the book progressed it drew me in more.

  17. I enjoyed this book. It had a very important lesson to go with the twisted plot. However, I did not expect some of the events in the story and I personally believe the author was a little too childish in this book. Although the lesson was understood greatly, it was portrayed in a weird manner. I think this book has some potential, however, and would recommend this book to friends.

    1. H2Hayes, I totally agree with the childishness. I want to read a book I can relate to, not something that is hard to imagine happening. I love the lesson that was given, but I feel like the author could of presented it differently.

  18. This book was one of the most interesting and relatable books I've ever read. I think the book presented the important lesson of being yourself no matter what anyone else says or does. the book was enjoyable mostly because of the things Stargirl did. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a book with an intersting plot and a love story.

  19. When I started to read this book, I thought it was a little weird. The more and more I got into it, I really started to enjoy it. I thought it was so cute how their relationship grows. However, I didn't like how Leo forced Stargirl to change. I was kind of disappointed, and I feel like this book teaches a good lesson. In life, there are going to be people who don't like you because you're different. But you just have to keep your head up and be yourself. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone who likes a cute, thoughtful love story.

  21. I thought this book was ok. It wasnt my favorite out of the ones I read, but it was pretty good. Even though it was short, it went by very slow for me. I didnt like the relationship between Leo and Stargirl. Because of that, it made me sad and disapointed, and I couldnt really get into the book. I would give the book a 3. It wasnt really my type of book, but it may be the type of book for other people.

  22. I thought this book was very interesting. It was nothing like I imagined it to be like. This book wasn't really as "girly" as I thought it would've been. However, I actually liked this book, I wouldn't say this book was amazing, but it wasn't awful. I would recommend this book to some friends.

  23. Honestly, I didn't like this book at all. The mood of it all is kind of iffy to me throughout the book. Then it goes to the old classic of one member in the relationship who is to scared to love to other for who they are. I didn't expect this book to be very good in the first place, but it was still a real disappointment.

  24. When I first began reading this book, I was just amazed at how weird it was. I was so confused. Throughout the book it told many things that Stargirl had done. All of them were just strange. It really made me sad when she turned halfway normal. This told me an important lesson to be yourself because other people's opinions do not matter. Everyone is different in their own way. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a sweet love story.

  25. This book was not what I thought it was going to be. It was a little weird in the beginning, but the farther I got into, the more I started to understand and like it. The narrator was a guy which was really surprising. It has a very sweet story line and teaches a valuable lesson. It shows that its okay to be yourself, no matter what. I recommend this book to anyone!
