Slam!

Seventeen-year-old Greg "Slam" Harris can do it all on the basketball court. He's seen ballplayers come and go, and he knows he could be one of the lucky ones. Maybe he'll make it to the top. Or maybe he'll stumble along the way. Slam's grades aren't that hot. And when his teachers jam his troubles in his face, he blows up. Slam never doubted himself on the court until he found himself going one-on-one with his own future, and he didn't have the ball.

  1. Slam! By Walter Dean Myers was a great book that described the troubles of coming up in the ghetto, and of being a student athlete. This book keeps you wanting more as it describes the struggles and conflict throughout the book.

  3. Slam is a book about a high school kid who has trouble with his grades, but he is a outstanding basketball player. Slam has to find out a way to keep his grades up, and he believes the coach is out to get him. Can Slam figure out a way to get enough playing time to make a difference in his basketball team's season? I enjoyed this book pretty well, and I would recomend it to anyone who likes basketball.

  4. Slam is a very exciting book about a high school student who has the mindset of an average high school athlete. He believes ,"My grades don't matter, I'll just play in the NBA." As the story progresses, Slam believes the coach doesn't like him because he "slammed" on him, but really, Slam has an attitude problem, and as he faces other challenges, Slam realizes that life is a game too, and the only difference is everyone's in it.

  5. I love how Slam! tells you the story through Slams eyes. You get to see his point of view of things when usually, we would only see that he had a bad attitude. Now, we get to see why he has that bad attitude.

  6. Slam! is a very good an entertaining book that keeps you hooked throughout the whole book. In the book, Slam goes through several challenges and persevers. Many Challenges involved Slam's friend Ice, dealing drugs and having to play against him. In the end, Slam learns an extremely valuable life lesson that may or may not play a huge roll in the future him.

  8. I love Slam. I love almost everything about it. It was well written, it had good dialect, it was told through the eyes of Greg, and it was really easy to get into. It wasn't a long book but with every page, it was super descriptive and detailed. That is why I love Slam!

  9. Slam is awesome! The dialect is very detailed and how the point of view through Slam's eyes was very good. When he was describing the game, I naturally knew what pace to read at, if was slow or fast paced tempo. For other people who play sports this teaches a valuable lesson on and off the court.

  10. Slam is a great book with a great internal conflict! Greg Harris is a teenager who has to transfer schools. Greg quickly realizes that his new school is far ahead of his old one, and he has trouble passing. The one thing he knows no one can surpass him at is basketball, but the coach doesn't start him because he has a bad attitude. Greg begins to think that all his teachers are against him, until a man named Goldy gives him some good advice. He says that life is a basketball court, but everyone plays. Some people win and others lose. Greg has to figure out what this means and apply it to his life, or he might fail. He might not even get to play basketball!

  11. Slam is a very teenage-average book. It has a lot of dialect. To be completely honest, I was not impressed by this book and would not recommend it to a friend. The only suspense that "impressed" me was the end of the book, at the party.
